Recently, the Internet has been buzzing about Invisalign altering the shape of patients’ faces. Is there truth behind this observation? Today, we’ll bust open this myth and find the truth.

Invisalign clear aligners, a removable and comfortable alternative to traditional braces, will not change your face shape overnight. It’s not a facelift; it’s orthodontic therapy. However, with any orthodontic treatment, teeth are purposefully moved into a more esthetic and healthy position. Because teeth provide the underlying support for cheeks and lips, Invisalign or braces can influence how facial features look, creating a more esthetically pleasing jawline and face shape.

Have you considered adult braces, but you cringe to think about wearing a mouthful of metal braces? Invisalign offers an effective and convenient alternative to traditional orthodontic braces. It’s great for teens and adults who want to maintain an attractive appearance while undergoing orthodontic treatment. Call Signature Smile Arts in Homewood, IL, today at (708) 799-5353 to schedule your Invisalign consultation. We’ll answer all of your questions, examine your mouth, and help you decide the best future for your smile.

What Invisalign Actually Changes

Invisalign works by using consistent, gentle pressure to shift teeth into their ideal position for appearance’s sake, but also for a balanced bite. A person’s bite, or occlusion, refers to the relationship between upper and lower teeth when your mouth is shut. Ideally, teeth fit together so that the jaw joints can rest when your mouth is closed. An unbalanced bite, or malocclusion, can lead to tooth wear and breakage, bruxism (grinding teeth), and TMJ disorders.

Invisalign clear aligner therapy will not alter your cheekbones, the size of your chin, or facial fat. Bone will not change shape, though you may notice that your jaw becomes more defined after treatment.

Bonus Effects Patients May Notice

As Invisalign adjusts your bite by moving your teeth into proper alignment, your jawline may appear smoother, lips fuller and more even, and your smile may seem wider. A hidden benefit is that the posture of your neck and jaw could improve with Invisalign treatment.

When Invisalign Has a Bigger Impact

Patients with issues like overbite or underbite usually qualify for Invisalign treatment, as do those with primarily cosmetic concerns or mild to moderate malocclusion. Older adults may notice a more youthful profile following treatment. In fact, many regain self-confidence from a more attractive, symmetrical smile. Lips can appear fuller, too, so prepare to look totally kissable!

What to Expect from Invisalign Treatment

We use 3D imaging and computer software to plan Invisalign cases. You’ll see and track your treatment progress alongside the dentist. Once your aligners are ready, you’ll be given a series to start treatment. Wear each aligner for approximately two weeks. A new aligner will feel tight, but it loosens as teeth shift. Dispose of old aligners.

Every six weeks or so, you’ll come in for a progress check. The dentist will ensure your treatment progress is on track. Note that if you do not wear your aligners for 22 hours a day, treatment could take longer than initially anticipated. Also, if you neglect to wear your aligner for an extended time, your teeth may begin to drift back out of alignment. In these cases, we often have to order new aligners and re-start the process. To you, this equals more time and expense, so it’s important to comply with the instructions the dentist provides regarding wear of your aligners.

Invisalign won’t give you a new face. It may, however, enhance the appearance of your smile, cheeks, lips, and jawline. Though Invisalign takes less time than braces, expect up to 18 months of orthodontic treatment for optimal results. To maintain your new smile, you will need to wear your retainer, as instructed, once treatment is complete. Clear retainers and fixed retainers are available upon request.
